Which games console should I buy?
All the current consoles are good. The right one depends on who's playing and what they like.
The short version
- PlayStation 5: the big-name exclusive games and the most popular choice for teens and adults.
- Xbox Series X / S: best value if you'll use Game Pass (a subscription with hundreds of games). Series S is the budget option.
- Nintendo Switch: plays on the TV and as a handheld. Brilliant for families and kids, with Mario, Zelda and Pokémon.
Money-saving tips
- Bundles with a game included are often cheaper than buying separately.
- Disc versions let you buy and sell second-hand games; digital-only consoles are cheaper up front.
- Official controllers last longer than very cheap third-party ones.
- Consoles are rarely discounted heavily, so a genuine drop is worth grabbing. Check the price history on each deal.
