What laptop should I buy?
Laptop specs look confusing, but for most people only a few numbers really matter.
The numbers that matter
- RAM: 8GB is the minimum for Windows today; 16GB is the comfortable choice and lasts longer.
- Storage: always pick an SSD. 256GB fills fast; 512GB is the sweet spot for most people.
- Screen: look for "Full HD" (1920x1080) or better. Lower resolutions look fuzzy.
- Battery: manufacturer claims are optimistic. Check independent reviews for real-world figures.
Windows, Mac or Chromebook?
- Windows: the widest choice at every price, and runs nearly all software and games.
- MacBook: excellent battery life and build, and pairs nicely with an iPhone. Costs more up front.
- Chromebook: cheap and simple for web, email and schoolwork, but can't run most Windows software.
Spotting a real deal
- Check the processor generation. An old model at a "big discount" can be worse than a newer, cheaper one.
- Back-to-school (August) and Black Friday are the usual low points. Each deal on our site shows its price history.
