iPad or Android tablet?
Tablets are great for streaming, browsing, kids and light work. The main decision is which system you want.
The short version
- iPad: smooth, long software support and the best choice of tablet apps. Ideal if you already have an iPhone.
- Samsung Galaxy Tab and other Android tablets: more choice of sizes and prices, and often include a stylus or expandable storage.
- Amazon Fire tablets: very cheap, good for video and kids, but limited apps (no Google Play Store).
What to check
- Storage: 64GB is fine for streaming; get 128GB or more for games, photos and offline downloads.
- Wi-Fi or cellular: Wi-Fi only is cheaper. You can use your phone's hotspot when out.
- Updates: check how many years of software updates the tablet will get. Longer support means a safer, longer-lasting device.
Saving money
- Last year's model is often almost as good for much less.
- Tablets are big sellers on Black Friday and Prime Day. Check price history before trusting a "was" price.
